is this a bad bearing?

Better than fair odds of it. Only other possibilities I can think of are:

- the motor is rubbing on the back, and the retaining clip occasionally catches (probably not -- the vibe is too strong)
- the motor is unbalanced (probably not, the vibe is intermitant, and that would be periodic)
- the ESC is having trouble keeping sync (probably not, the vibe isn't speed dependent)

I'd say if there's nothing loose or catching inside the bell, and the bearings audibly click when you spin the motor by hand, the're on the way out -- time to order replacements.

kinda sucks since this motor is brand new, never even had a prop on it.I guess what can you expect for $14.99 I did order the replacement bearings already just because they were cheap and I had a feeling the bearings were the issue.Am I going to need any special tools to take the motor apart?I found two set screws on the shaft but after I loosened them nothing came apart:confused:

There is also a clip on the rear.

Maybe this will help...

You might try just pulling and lubing the bearings you have now. I do this to all my motors even before I run them and so far, it has been a lifesaver on the NTM's based on the feedback from other users and failure rates.

Kinda sounds like a bad bearing. I wonder if the timing might be way out? Does the same esc work ok on a different motor? Might be worth investigating the timing before you pull it apart. Definitely worth it if you replace the bearings and it still does it!

The esc runs another motor just fine,I haven't had a chance to change the bearings yet so I still don't know for 100% sure what the problem is.I've never heard of timing an esc,Could you elaborate on what "timing" is and how do you adjust it?

Hi Tree98, The timing of a esc could cause the noise you are describing or it could be bearings. This is a link that will give you good info about esc timing. Innov8tive does a better job of describing it than I ever could: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8731985&postcount=1090. Hopefully this will give you some help. Sometimes esc's are shipped with the wrong timing setup. If you change the bearings and that doesn't fix the problem you might want to check the timing or if you can't be bothered just replace the esc. Good Luck!

PS just found this on setting up suppo motors and esc's, may come in handy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYaVRIjditQ

Tree98,

It does sound like you got a motor with a bad bearing. Out of curiosity, does it make the same noise with a prop on the motor?

Rest assured, we are happy to replace the motor if it is faulty; we rarely see issues with the Suppo motors, but occasionally one slips through....but Suppo's warranty is very good, and we want to make sure you are happy with the performance of our products. Feel free to give us a call or email support@altitudehobbies.com and we will get it taken care of for you.

I've been exceptionally pleased with Garret @ AH, and I never have exchanged emails with the man. I put requests in orders or by his contact page and in a week or two the new items are on the site; just awesome. Orders go out the same day they're made and come well packaged.

Now ... if we could just get decently lightweight motors in the 1400KV range with bolt on prop adapters (not the collets Suppo uses) and some small 10A or 12A SimonK ESCs, life would be complete with my needs.

It looks like both are possable from the noise .I found bad timing would cause my esc to get hot when it would skip at full power, even when the motor wasn't loaded. Seemed to go back to normal one day with a different motor then I melted it threw the bottom of my versa wing mid flight.
Id Start with bearings like your doing.

While we're on the topic of factory motor issues, anyone get a ntm motor with the accessory holes miss drilled or miss drilled accessory prop shafts?

Garret great too see awesome customer service!

Not yet, but that sounds about right for their quality control lately... I have had no issues with the 5 I got, but have heard some real horror stories about the later NTM's...

+ 1 for Altitude and Garret.

Altitude is my first stop when I need parts. The service is unmatched.

The Suppos are great motors for the price. Altitude's service makes the decision obvious.

I use ntm's on all my multis and never got a bad one but my new 42-38 struggled to line up and has a wobble, I'm getting a new accessory pack to see if its just that (the cheep $2 fix hopefully).
