Without a second motor, it can be any brushless, as a check, my guess is there are two possibilities.
1. You have a loose connection somewhere close to the motor so as it starts to spin the connection breaks but remakes as the motor runs down and it repeats. A permanent connection fail and the motor just twitches.
2. More likely there is a fault in the ESC.
Substitution with items that are known to work is the only way to find out what has failed.
I keep a spare ESC, a servo tester to run it and a slightly puffed 2a LiPo on the bench so I can test motors and ESCs in exactly this situation.
