Glad FGA sent me an invite to the FB page this morning - somehow I totally missed this thread :black_eyed:
Chad K is turning into a full on johnny appleseed of RC youtube channels, which is a very good thing
I love the sound of this so far. With that crew challenges are a must. I'd love to see them given some really BAD quads and asked to try some tough flying challenges with them. It would work well for build challenges too - limited budget, limited time, crazy restrictions (frame must be edible, props must be unbalanced, build should be asymetrical, use four different random motors/ESC's instead of a matched set....)
I'd really like to see some spec competition too. Give them all identical quads built by the same person and see who can get the best time through a course. Or give them all identical parts and see how different their builds come out. Heck get them to try some really bad ideas - flying through a waterfall or waterpark or sprinkers. Get them really mini quads and have them fly a minature golf course - through the obstacles and everything (would love to see them make it through a windmill.) Make them fly with their transmitters held backwards, or in a mode they're not used to. Give them phantoms to fly in an acrobatic competition
You've got some amazing pilots and builders lined up - with great personalities. But the one criticism I have is that they're all a bit too similar. All four of the guys featured do amazing work and fly like nobodies business, they also seem to have a great sense of humor and great chemistry together. Great stuff! But I haven't seen any of them do any really crazy builds or super nutty experiments on the technology side. Chad has done some really amazing off the chart builds for speed and performance, Steele does great clean high performance builds, Charpu was one of the first I saw to experiment with tilted motors but that's the most out there thing I remember seeing from the selected talent.
Don't get me wrong - it's a great team and I'm not trying to put anyone down. But for something top gearish I'd expect a bit more variety. The thing that seems to be missing is a bit more of a mad scientist (a David W or Peter S type if you will.) Right now they're all mostly focused on mini quads and racing. I can't remember seeing any of them fly anything bigger than a 380. I get that racing is big and getting bigger and I'm all for it. But it doesn't sound like the goal of this channel is to be racing focused but rather advanced multirotor in general. I get that this is aimed to be more advanced - but that shouldn't rule out some doc brown level insanity on the build table, being more advanced just means crazier things can be pulled off
I wish I knew more neat spots to fly in LA...but I don't get out there often enough. There are the big concrete dinosaurs in Cabazon a bit east. And the windfarms near palm springs. Bombay Beach/salvation mountain/the slabs along the Salton sea would be an interesting area to fly around as well. There's some great canyons to do a bit of star wars "beggars canyon" type of flying through in Ocotillo wells but again we're getting kind of far from LA. Heck around here we've got only got military drone training we've also got the imperial sand dunes, the names (excuse my lousy flying, I don't get to fly nearly as often as I wish I could), and a bunch of other neat desert places.
Ok...la...la....The bridge to nowhere comes to mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_to_Nowhere_(San_Gabriel_Mountains) (though IMHO the one we have here in Yuma is more attractive) The cascades of the LA Aqueduct are just east of I-5 as you go north out of LA and may be interesting...kind of the polar opposite of the Hawaii waterfall though Flying through the LA river always sounded interesting to me...
