Glad FGA sent me an invite to the FB page this morning - somehow I totally missed this thread :black_eyed:

Chad K is turning into a full on johnny appleseed of RC youtube channels, which is a very good thing :D

I love the sound of this so far. With that crew challenges are a must. I'd love to see them given some really BAD quads and asked to try some tough flying challenges with them. It would work well for build challenges too - limited budget, limited time, crazy restrictions (frame must be edible, props must be unbalanced, build should be asymetrical, use four different random motors/ESC's instead of a matched set....)

I'd really like to see some spec competition too. Give them all identical quads built by the same person and see who can get the best time through a course. Or give them all identical parts and see how different their builds come out. Heck get them to try some really bad ideas - flying through a waterfall or waterpark or sprinkers. Get them really mini quads and have them fly a minature golf course - through the obstacles and everything (would love to see them make it through a windmill.) Make them fly with their transmitters held backwards, or in a mode they're not used to. Give them phantoms to fly in an acrobatic competition :D

You've got some amazing pilots and builders lined up - with great personalities. But the one criticism I have is that they're all a bit too similar. All four of the guys featured do amazing work and fly like nobodies business, they also seem to have a great sense of humor and great chemistry together. Great stuff! But I haven't seen any of them do any really crazy builds or super nutty experiments on the technology side. Chad has done some really amazing off the chart builds for speed and performance, Steele does great clean high performance builds, Charpu was one of the first I saw to experiment with tilted motors but that's the most out there thing I remember seeing from the selected talent.

Don't get me wrong - it's a great team and I'm not trying to put anyone down. But for something top gearish I'd expect a bit more variety. The thing that seems to be missing is a bit more of a mad scientist (a David W or Peter S type if you will.) Right now they're all mostly focused on mini quads and racing. I can't remember seeing any of them fly anything bigger than a 380. I get that racing is big and getting bigger and I'm all for it. But it doesn't sound like the goal of this channel is to be racing focused but rather advanced multirotor in general. I get that this is aimed to be more advanced - but that shouldn't rule out some doc brown level insanity on the build table, being more advanced just means crazier things can be pulled off ;)

I wish I knew more neat spots to fly in LA...but I don't get out there often enough. There are the big concrete dinosaurs in Cabazon a bit east. And the windfarms near palm springs. Bombay Beach/salvation mountain/the slabs along the Salton sea would be an interesting area to fly around as well. There's some great canyons to do a bit of star wars "beggars canyon" type of flying through in Ocotillo wells but again we're getting kind of far from LA. Heck around here we've got only got military drone training we've also got the imperial sand dunes, the names (excuse my lousy flying, I don't get to fly nearly as often as I wish I could), and a bunch of other neat desert places.

Ok...la...la....The bridge to nowhere comes to mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_to_Nowhere_(San_Gabriel_Mountains) (though IMHO the one we have here in Yuma is more attractive) The cascades of the LA Aqueduct are just east of I-5 as you go north out of LA and may be interesting...kind of the polar opposite of the Hawaii waterfall though :D Flying through the LA river always sounded interesting to me...

I didn't want to point it out myself, but I agree with you. If the show is to showcase technologies and builds beyond mini quads then there should be at least one person with a lot of experience in larger, more docile builds and someone who can get crazy and improvise with any type of build. If only there was some mad scientist in the desert somewhere...;)

Send me a group invite! I'd love to do this sort of stuff over facebook too. I am a noob, so I can give that perspective. I do know how to setup and run a mini quad, but I haven't flown anything other than freerider

Thinking about it some more I do see how it could be a good thing. It could be used as a way to get more community involvement and keep things fresh. Instead of having a "resident" mad scientist type of person it could be a guest position filled by various people from time to time. Bring in someone like BorisB for a tech talk about gyros and tuning - then challenge the hosts by giving them mistuned quads and having them try to identify what was mistuned. Bring in Trappy or ibcrazy to talk LRS and challenge the hosts to flying in an RF hostile environment. Bring in David and do something with tri's. Get Peabody124 in with some brushed sparkys for the mini-golf challenge idea I mentioned earlier. I'd love to see Soma and MotoMoto bring out some aliens and FC's and give the guys a challenge with them.

Along the same lines since Chad is a leader in bringing the community into his productions why not turn to the community. When ideas for challenges or builds are sourced from the community bring the community member in (through skype or something maybe) to help present and judge. (I can almost picture a small monitor strapped to a quad to provide a virtual presence for visitors :D)

Still brainstorming - could even make a challenge for the community out of it. Feature the guests but obscure their identity for the episode and challenge the community to figure out who they are before a reveal in the next episode.

So yeah, even without a full time mad scientist host there are quite a few fun ways specialists could be brought in....

True, there are so many niches in the multirotor hobby that having an expert for each would be unwieldy. So I guess it is better to have hosts who are experts in a popular area of the hobby and who can entertain. After all, a large part of Top Gear and other successful shows is the personality and synergy between the hosts. And the more I think about it, although the hosts are all miniquad pilots, they each have their own unique style of flying to entertain viewers.

I'm just concerned most episodes will be involving miniquads. Not that that is a bad thing, it just might get repetitive.

Just throwing it out there since I'm probably the only one, but I'd like to see more info on helicopters. It has *a* rotor and I'm sure getting those guys to fly them would be a riot! It might be interesting to see a 250 sized FPV heli race.

Every Top Gear franchise / knock off / imitation Ive ever seen has failed miserably IMO, even though most where pretty much straight copies, with large production budgets and exhaustive casting for selecting the presenters, so Id be careful drawing too much inspiration from it. What mostly makes Top Gear work is the presenters and their weird synergy. They can do a show on mowing lawn and it would still be funny. Thats not something you can just copy. Not unless you can sign Clarkson & Co. Well, they are looking for a job arent they ? :p

This brings up a very good point. Are we talking the OG Brit version of Top Gear or the American version. Cause, IMO the American version was awful cause the show was a bitch to the sponsors. Don't be a bitch to any sponsors. Kids nowadays see right through that crap

Looking to build this grassroots... if anyone wants to come in as a sponsor they have to play by our rules.

UPDATE: Steele and I will be on the FT After Hours podcast tomorrow. Are there any questions you guys want answered?

Chad, What have you been doing since FliteTest moved out of your basement? Based on the past what do you see for the future of FliteTest? What has been your worst crash since you've been on the podcast last?

Mr. Steele, What is your worst crash? How long have you been in the hobby? What was your first hobby grade aircraft(multi or fixed wing)? Have you flown any fixed wing? Does fixed wing racing interest you? What do you see for the future of multirotor racing?

1. What would be the perfect episode?
Challenges , dares, double dares, and finally, I double drone dare you to fly through a car with its windows down!

that should be a segment on the show

I DOUBLE DRONE DARE YOU!

i double drone dare chad to fly over the white house, JK LOLZ

2. What products would you like to see featured?
CONTROL BOARD SHOOTOUT
naze32 vs cc3d vs flip32 vs dodo board
performance vs price vs ease of use and accessory use like telemetry and other functions

this might sound silly but here goes
i think you should do something on the cheap chinese ZMR250
reason being i think it is turning into the honda civic of the car tuning world
In TOP GEAR they all love hot hatches, common vehicles used for performance
the ZMR in my opinion can relate, like the honda civic there are tons of customizing options and go fast goodies
the ZMR has tons of options like CF white fiberglass Power dist boards , colors spacers, bumpers,
there is a lot on thingaverse and different customization ,

3. Who would you like to see on the show?
i think you should have multi rotor flyins in different citys to find interesting people to put on the show,
find people with good tips and tricks to absorb and put them on the show

5. What's your favorite multirotor?
one off custom cheap junk made in peoples basements,
but more often it seems like, one off custom expensive junk, :D my FAV

What's a good format for this? Maybe each of them argues theirs is the best choice and tries to prove it somehow?

Do a build, tune, fly style for each board with different pilots, see what they like and what they dislike about that. Show a good, bad, and differences part of each. They can be their own video by themselves

I would think same frame for all boards and some form of obstacles that the board has to handle. Hold position/gps lock, loiter, maneuverability on a course, tuning options.

Each pilot has his own rig with the only difference being the FC and they all compete in each of the categories.
