WingMill RC: Half Pipe and Half Pipe - Delta

Here it is! After over a year in development, the HalfPipe and HalfPipe - Delta are now available! :D

RC Flyers crash... Beginner flyers crash a lot! Crashing is an upsetting and off-putting hurdle that all beginners must face in order to build their skills to a level at which they don't crash (so often). The HalfPipes are 'disposable' tough planes to help beginners feel less bad about crashing and develop their skills with confidence. They can be set to be easy-going gentle flyers or have their rates set to max and become super agile stunt planes. On 2S and with the throttled kept low, they can fly at a jogging pace. When given a 3S battery, the power is simply overkill and they can scream through the air. As your skills develop, you can effectively increase the difficulty level; hone in your reaction speeds and stick-precision before making the leap to more 3D-flying models.

I hope these designs will give beginners the easy and forgiving introduction to the hobby that I aimed for them to. And I also hope that more experienced flyers will also get much enjoyment out of one of these designs. This is of course my first ever release, so feedback will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to have a go at one of these and do not hesitate to ask questions if you have any! :D

Special Thanks to @mackaiver for building this model early access and entering it into the Rigorous Testing Program.

Important note: these designs are based on 6mm Depron foam - Flite Test foam is 5mm, so cut your slot-holes a millimetre slimmer if you're building with it!

Wake up! Time to fly!
Nicely done mate. Looks stable enough even I might be able to fly one hehe. Too many other things on the to do list though right now. Maybe by mid summer I could be in a place to try this.

Hope this gains popularity and grows your exposure to the RC world. Congratz to the ole man too for getting in the air.

Thanks guys! :D

Yeah, seeing my Dad's reaction to his crashes as well as just expressions of stress, even in the simulator, I was quite determined to get this design mitigating all of those 'emotional barriers'. Hopefully I've gone the right way about it - only experience will tell, but the comments from others are definitely encouraging.

What's also very encouraging is just how close to indestructible @mackaiver made his - while using a slightly larger prop than it was designed for to boot!

Funky little p.i.s.! Went with the delta.
Nice and small for those after dinner rips!
2 hours to this point. Horns, rods and Bob's your uncle. Nice design, thanks!

And the maiden! Lotsa fun for $1.50 in foamboard!

What motor were you using? I have a spare 1806 2200kv which is apparently good for 460g on 3s with a five inch prop. Seems like it should be more than enough.

Also, do you recall the AUW of your build, and did you use paper-on DTFB? If you did, did you scale to 83%?

Thanks. 🙂

That's only a 100kv short of what my ones used! A 5 inch prop on that is a rocket on 3S and still pretty damn fast on 2S. I can't speak for Homey, but my earlier models were roughly 300g AUW and the prototype could handle an extra 50g of camera being added.

Hola,

Emax 2204 2300 with a 6045 prop. 1000mah 3s. Lotsa power. If I build another, I'll put a cf spar in the wing plate. I can't remember auw!

Step one complete! I did 100% scale but I’m using DTFB so I’ll be scaling down the slots. I’m going to try paper off and reinforcing with colored packing tape where I need extra stiffness.

I ended up liking the look of the tape enough that I taped almost everything. With an 1806 and a 450mah 2s, it comes to 162g. I’ll add a few more grams, but it’s looking pretty good.

Ooh that looks very nice! Good idea with the blue-for-top, red-for-bottom scheme. You'll appreciate that glossy finish you've added to the under-belly as well, landings can make it particularly muddy at this time of year!

Make sure to keep the roll rates nice and low. In retrospect, the Delta's roll capability is really OTT.

Looking forward to the maiden! :D

No maiden yet, but I’m done! I’m happy with the weight. It came in at 163g or 5.75oz. That’s with a 450mah 2c and an 1806 motor. I think I should be able to fly this pretty slowly.

One minor problem with my build is that the tail curves downward about 5mm starting from about the mid-section. I think I must have been holding it bent when I glued the fuselage and half pipe on, and those parts held that shape when they dried. I thought about detaching the rear of the fuselage and half pipe to reglue it, but that would make a mess. I compensated with some built-in up elevator and I think it will be fine. Live and learn!

I’ll hopefully have a chance to maiden it this weekend. Tomorrow will be 12f after work and Friday will be 1f. Hard pass!

Maidened! Wind was about 15mph at the field, but it’s the best flying weather I’ve had in a couple weeks. It flew great! The bend in the tail (build error) didn’t amount to anything. It flew perfectly out of my hand and was controllable in the high wind. Barrel rolls were flawless. It was fun snapping it back and forth. Flying inverted was easy too. 2s 450mah batteries were lots of fun. A 3s 550mah was a riot! Unlimited vertical, unlimited rolls, etc. 2s is definitely the better choice though. Landing was very nice with it too. I could come in nice and slow and then go full up elevator to stall and drop it straight down.

Apologies for the video. My camera man is only 8, and I don’t pay him much.

Very nicely done! Those were some harsh winds to maiden it in - at points they were so hard your cameraman sounded like he was speaking into a fan - but you managed them gracefully.

3S is good for fighting wind; at high throttles, it can become less of a plane and more of a missile haha! I'm glad you're not only flying it smoothly but also doing all the tricks with it as as well and also above all; I'm glad you are enjoying it! :D
