This is awesome guys!! What a great way to finish out phase 1! :applause:

I chose the Dornier Do 335 because I think it has a lot of potential and I think it should have been in the war and I think it looks cool. Some history of the plane is at https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.asp?aircraft_id=104

Welcome aboard! You're a little late to hit the Phase 1 deadline (it was 12/31/2017) but you are absolutely in time for the Phase 2 part of the fun so build away! And don't forget to start up a build thread on your project and post a link to it here so we can all follow along.

Welcome aboard! And talk about a surprise entry - from silence to 'boom - here's an awesome flying plane just in time for the deadline' in one post! :)

I added the plans and basic build instructions for the XP-81, so I think it's a wrap! Never got landing gear of bomb releases done, but I got some parachute men for Christmas that will probably end up ejecting from under the hatch.

Excellent! Everyone should have a couple of those parachute guys to drop from planes :)

IM DONE !
I created an EDF powerpod and figured out a way to install F-pack on the same base.
Video and probably flight video coming tomorrow!
Plane is ready to fly and all funktions are working!

Awesome! So happy you were able to get this worked up so quickly! It's a really wacky design and it's going to look so cool in the air!

Well, think I'm done, and got in just under the wire. It's 9:50pm here lol.

Flapjack is completed and flight tested. Plans with proper CG and control throws are done and posted, build log is done and posted, and all the optional 3D printable parts are uploaded and posted as well.

Yes, we'll allow the entry under 'local time rules' :p Seriously, this is an amazing design to pull off in foam board, and the 3D printed elements just push it over the top! Now we need to see a painted up pretty version at FliteFest! :applause:

Thanks, rockyboy, for making this happen!

You're welcome! It's been a great experience so far - and we're not done yet! :D

Next up on my end is getting the scoring underway for Phase 1. I've been able to recruit a couple helpers for scoring and expect to have a package out to them by tomorrow so we can get this part rolling. If anyone else is interested in joining in as a scoring helper, please send me a PM in the next day or two. To set expectations, judging helpers are not allowed to score their own entry, and scores will be mathematically normalized between judges to account for variations in scoring.

My commitment to the community is to get Phase 1 scoring complete by the end of January so we can all celebrate these awesome projects by some truly creative mad genius builders and designers.

Phase 2 will kickoff as soon as FliteTest announces dates for the next FliteFest event at which point I'll be recruiting local CD (Contest Director in AMA parlance) and opening up event specific challenge threads for localized encouragement and smack talk. That process will repeat for each FliteFest held in 2018.

Builders - if you haven't completed your design or flight yet, please keep going!! All entries started in Phase 1 can be included in the Phase 2 events, even if the plans/video/etc weren't completed in time for Phase 1 scoring. We all want to see these crazy planes in the air, and to celebrate everyone having success designing and building their own DTFB planes from scratch.

THANK YOU to everyone for participating on this crazy ride - it's been a HUUUUGE amount of fun! :applause:

Below is the list of the 19 entries that have completed the requirements to be scored. This means they have shared plans, some basic build instructions or photos, and a video with proof of flight (or was at least briefly airborne!).

If I have missed any projects that met these critiera, please let me know ASAP so I can get them into the scoring process.

Thanks!

This is a REALLY impressive list of completed projects. By far THE best lineup of some really impressive work by very talented people.

Yea, Sience Fiction planes are cool!
I would love to see some real flying spaceships, with airfoil, the most ships you find on the internet fly with a quad, but I think thats lame because theres no challenge and it looks not that good in the air.
I would like to do do the shuttle from Avatar!

That would be pretty awesome! I missed this one, but would also love to participate in the next one. An X-wing, ARC-170, or naboo Starfighter would amazing challenges. Maybe even an Y-wing as a canard type design hmm..

You've only missed Phase 1 of this challenge!

Phase 2 is building from (or an extension of) any of the entries started in the challenge for in-person demonstration / celebration at one of the Flite Fest events in 2018. See first post in this thread for more details.

This means 44 very neat ideas - of which 25 haven't been fully completed yet and you would need to do some level of design work - are open and needing your attention! :applause:

Neat idea guys!

No specific topic has been selected as yet for next year, but a couple of the other topics that have been floating around are:

- Amphibious craft (anything capable of taking off/landing on water)
- Classic to Modern (DTFB conversion of any balsa plans set - thousands available over at Outerzone - possibly with a balsa build component or bonus as well)
- Composite Design (use combination of multiple materials from list of DTFB, Fiberglass, block foam, Balsa, 3D Printing, other)
- Fantasy Craft (anything that's never been built full scale for sustained flight - which could nicely include sci-fi and outlandish steam punk craft too)

I'm adding to the list anytime I hear something that sounds interesting and gets several people excited.

My plan is to start a thread soliciting and boiling down the ideas a couple months before FliteFest east, continue gathering input at the Ohio event, and announce the FF19 challenge using the same process of collecting input on the guidelines and scoring stuff in the week after FFE.

I will also be happily accepting other volunteers to help run more of the challenge process next year. This has been a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of work. I want to make sure this tradition is able to continue for the community for many years to come, and lives on long beyond me taking an organizing role (and not lead to hobby burn-out for me either!)

Other Idea:
Make something fly, but not a plane!
vehicles, buildings, animals, things, people...
but quads are not allowed, it should fly using aerodynamics.

But fantasy is my favorite!

Hmm.. might have to give that a go. I still want to give that monster B-36 a go at some point, as well as trying my hand at building an XF5U for myself! Just have to push myself to get my other projects finished up first..:p.

Wake up! Time to fly!
Add "Edge of Space" to the list of potential build themes. Anything that has been to the edge of space either for space flight or just high altitude for various purposes. To include any and all mother ship type support craft. Two pilots a must per team.

That would be pretty cool! I can see that one being very interesting and fun.

Could also consider just doing a theme of the X-planes and similar Cold War experimental aircraft. Any experimental aircraft 1945-1970s or such. Would allow for a wide range of subjects, from VTOLs to spaceplanes!

The logical next step is of course something Cold War era, or perhaps one of the many specific conflicts within. Lots of options.

If I participate in the next one it'll have to be a composite or possibly balsa build for a variety of reasons. I've run into too many problems with DTFB longevity and don't have the resources to devote to major builds which then fall apart in the hangar. Also I'd need to find a way to integrate it into what we're doing at J&H Aerospace. The cost in terms of R&D resources/time for the Daimler Benz was not exactly a positive thing and caused three important (and very cool, mind you) projects to get pushed back excessively while I chased down stupid electrical problems.

Plus side was that we got some really, really cool flight footage and I like that sort of thing. Pretty sure whatever we do next time will have to be rocket powered in some way. That's the only thing that could top this. ;)

My plan is to start a thread soliciting and boiling down the ideas a couple months before FliteFest east, continue gathering input at the Ohio event, and announce the FF19 challenge using the same process of collecting input on the guidelines and scoring stuff in the week after FFE.

Definitely a good plan.

I'm dealing with DTFB burnout right now. ;)

I think we should do a FB rocket challenge! It could be any rocket, real or homemade, with extra points going to those who make really scale FB models of course. I have been thinking about this for a while and if Flite Test allows rocketry at FF events this would be a great challenge. Also it would be no where near as complicated as building an airplane, or as expensive, so more people could get involved. If you guys like this idea let me know because I might start a thread if there's enough interest.
