for me it was good temp controlled iron + a flux pen... getting the solder onto stuff goes so much better with a bit of flux.

Agreed, flux is your friend.
Even with extra flux, I could not get the Walmart iron to work.

@HunnyBunnysMonster - I'm hooked on gliders though I'm still building foam board planes. There are plenty of glider kits out there to choose from now. I've built this one and really like it. It does take some patience to put together but it just floats and stays up forever.
