What Did You Fly Today

I got a good flight with my blacked out Mini Speedster this morning. As well as a couple good crashes! I'm getting better on the stick. Still having a tendency to be twitchy rather than smooth.

It was bit windy, so I tried to keep it low and out of the major wind. I actually got 4 nice laps around the outfield before I let it get too high and the wind pushed it out of sight behind the dugout. I chopped the throttle and heard it hit the trees and then the ground. Upon recovery, I found the power pod pushed back about 1/2" and one side of the fuse was broken at the thinnest point behind and under the wing. The power pod pulled back into position, and the wing fell fairly stable.

The fuse was a loss any way, so I figured I'd take one more go round. I got about half a lap in when the wing separated and the fuse augured in for a spectacular lawn dart landing!

Build, Fly, Crash, Repeat Definitely another Mini Speedster coming up.

A week or so ago I decided to see whether my crashes were the result of my poor piloting skills or my poor building skills so I bought a highly recommended plane for beginners, the Aeroscout. Turns out, it might be both my piloting and my building. :D Anyway……. took a bit of scrap stuff I had around and rigged a mount for my knockoff GoPro clone.

It was a interesting day at the local park. I was flying the Wide-Body Arrow and towards the end of the first flight the plane sort of went out of control. As it rolled over I thought to myself, "Well there goes another one." Then, I was able to get it to level out, turn around and bring it in for a half way decent landing. That is the flight video below.

After checking all of the parts and making sure the battery wasn't flopping around, I could not find a issue. I thought maybe it was a strong gust of wind so I tied it again. After about a minute of flying just fine, it turned up and over and started to nosedive. I was able to get it back under control and land it again.

Then something unusual happened, I was approached by a man, whom I did not know, that had a Quad and asked if he could try and take some video of my plane in flight. I explained to him that I was having some issues. He asked if he could video the next flight. I said, "Sure." Nice guy and showed a lot of interest. He asked a lot of smart questions and in the process of answering his questions about the plane, just before I launched, I discovered the issue. He asked me what makes it turn and I tied to show him the Elevons move and discovered that I had a sticking servo that would bind-up at the far end of movement in both directions on one side.

So I came home and changed it out. Now I'm going to get up early and try this again.

Re-fab’d a gopro mount on my Aeroscout and took it to the lake. I think I’ll practice more over dry land before I try this again!

Got a nice still or two out of that, including this one that shows the kinds of cliffs that surround the lake and why my next build is a sloper.

First time flying in years. Just got this about two weeks ago, built it, crashed it, rebuilt it and then had a wonderfully good flight with it tonight, although my hands are legs are still shaking a bit. Luckily I figured out right before I launched her that I had my ailerons backwards which is probably what caused the disaster the last time.

Took the Wide-body Arrow out for a quick spin around the park. I changed some of the components around so I could use my bigger batteries. The extra weight seemed to really help make it smoother and after 5 minutes, I still had 33% left even with my FPV transmitter turned up a bit.

Took my 30in and 48in P36s up at the club fly night Thursday evening as well as my 13th Squadron F6F. Had something really wrong with the Hellcat CG and it flew quite scarily (my problem that night, not the plane - it's a great flier that I've flow quite a bit - expecting my problem this time was just lack of sleep and no brain) The mini P36 is just easy and fun to fly and I ran 3 batteries through it. I also got to work out an 'issue' with the 48" P36 design that had the power pod work its way to being a bit sloppy and also think I might need just a tiny touch of down thrust to clean it up just right. In all a perfect night of flying on 2 hours of sleep! (the weather was absolutely perfect and on a club night no less that I couldn't pass it up, but yuck)

My third FT Spitfire got its first flight today. After chucking on about 40g of nose weight, and a lot of set-up issues (mainly due to unfamiliarity with the transmitter), we got a good few minutes in a rather stiff breeze. Then, once I landed it, I adjusted the elevator trim, and she was perfect. I even managed a pretty decent loop with her! (And that was my first with a big model!)

This is the best one yet!

Yesterday I successfully tested my new twin engine plane I designed and built for UAV competition (it's about autonomous payload delivery). It flew very nice, however it has lots of problems I need to fix by August to get fully functional and reliable platform before the final stage and have enough time for tests and training flights. It has several interesting design features (or design flaws) and it's the first fiberglass-covered plane I ever made. It also has many 3D printed parts.
Video from the chase plane
And actually I flew both planes simultaneously (chase plane was loitering in autonomous mode while I flew a new plane using my older radio).

Flew FT Spitfire #3 twice over the weekend, in some fairly windy conditions. It handles them well - even at less than full throttle!
