XF VIPER - Foamboard F-16 EDF

Ok Gents, this isn't rocket science just the way I decided to try and secure my canopy hatch. Having to secure it each time with packing tape wasn't going to cut it. The pictures pretty much show what I did. It holds pretty securely when lifting the plane from the middle of the canopy. If I picked up on the plane further back on the canopy the magnet would release under the weight. I may still secure the rear of the hatch with packing tape as a backup, but at least I dont have to seal the whole thing.

finally got to maiden the scaled down f16 on a 4s 1300 mah lipo / 50 mm 11 blade edf 40 a esc ,, my battery placement was a bit to far back , had to put it almost near the same place as Kilroy07 pic above , scaling down possibly affects cg, on the way to rc park wind was gentle, by the time I got there it started getting real windy, decided to fly anyways,, 1st flight tail heavy,, 2nd flight better cg but getting pushed around by the wind, 3rd flight started ok but had a rough landing,, tough lil plane hardly damaged, nose a lil crumpled ,,, I decided to wait for a calmer day for my next flight,, might make it easier for my limited experience to trim her out and open her up
WOW William you certainly gave it a good wind test. She looks good in the air, less wind and I bet she flies like a dream. Great flying area by the way!

@william steendam, just to confirm, did you just size down each page or did you go in and adjust A/B folds and other slots? I think just re-size the entire page?
I just resized entire page.. a and b folds as well as slots etc i just made my cuts on outside of line " i scratchbuild and cut out myself. I figured it would take less time and effort to do it manually whilst cutting" it worked out fine

Thanks @william steendam ! Out of curiosity, what is your weight without battery? I have a 50mm EDF that runs on 3S producing 650g of thrust at max. Curious if that will be enough for this design?

Love this thread. I just got my first EDF and was looking for what to build. Really was wanting to build an F-16 so was super happy to find this one. I started cutting out a 90% scale version of it last night to use with the 64mm EDF I got last week. I'll post some pics as I start the build process. Thanks to Ben for sharing this and to all those who have been posting their experiences with it. Hoping to take mine to FliteFest Texas in November.

Sorry for being dense but can someone share pictures of the nose assembly with the former. So since the top of the rear nose is indented a bit, where does the former go?

Is it just inset a bit to make contact with all sides or is it angled? I don’t think it sits on the paper but could be wrong?

That indent is where the front lip of the canopy piece will fit (roll the paper over the lip there for strength.)
See Liemavick's post just above yours for a cool idea using magnets.

I used the formers as I was forming the nose just to get the shape right but did not glue it in place.

I had the same question ;)
Missing might be a shot where you ended up with battery and electronics and just what to do with the "formers" I almost glued them in as bulkheads until I didn't see any pics to do that. So I used them inside the nose and fuselage to help line the two up (was that the intent?)

Hope this helps

I just weighed her without battery . 445 g ,, edf im using is a 50 mm 11 blade / 4s lipo produceing 850 g of thrust,, I used half to 2 thirds of her power and she went hard,, I believe 650 g thrust should be heaps, as for formers, I used them to get the basic shape and form whilst glue dried then I discarded them, not sure if build needed them or was supposed to have bulkheads tho,, but at this size it seems pretty tough with out it.

Just have to see thx to @Mid7night . I’m not the best builder but these plans are obviously well thought out and things just fit so well. I was terrified of the nose cone but it went together very easily for me!

Scaled down plans for a 50mm EDF. @AircPirateNinsei ill post them when done and built to confirm things.

Already have scaled down plans for 50 mm edf .... linked above lol... i assume u redid them for a laser cutter ? Just curious

I went ahead and put wings and fusulage &intake as one piece for 50 mm version with some minor issues but easy to fix. full part1 and part 2 are complete plans for 2 sheets of foamboard.

50mm scaled down version. Weighs in at 350g and has a 50mm edf capable of 650g of thrust on 3s. Nervous as my only high C rated battery is a 1300 3s 55c and weighs 130g. At storage charge it is not enough at full throttle to lift this.

I also have a smaller 3s 850mah 55c battery which I may try first.

Hope to maiden tomorrow.

Wow! Awesome plane - blew the guys away at the field. Used a little 850 3s as I was concerned with weight and it struggled to get to speed but once it did was super smooth. Felt way sluggish though. A guy at the field had a banana hobby f-16 and mentioned his had a cheater hole on the bottom. A little on the fly surgery and second flight - huge difference. Used my larger 1300 3s and flew great. Certainly not a rocket but a nice stable plane.

Next up, rebuild but removing a lot of the paper on the inside.

Thanks @Mid7night !

Here is my 50 mm version. Thanks Ben.

It flies fast(for me) and also glides when throttle is cut for landing.
