Help! Building my first FPV plane

You won't kill a receiver by using the wrong antenna. The worst that will happen is you could have reduced reception/range if it doesn't match the polarity of the antenna on the transmitter.

You can kill a transmitter by running it with no antenna or shorting it out.
Yeah it great when you wonder why your range is only like 50ft and then you realize the antenna was out for like 5 min! (On 800mw)

You really don't need more than 200mw. I've gone plenty far enough on that to exceed the range of normal radio transmitters, but I fly long range everything and have flight controllers with GPS for return to home, so it's not a problem. Good antennas are worth far more than higher power.

Depends how much interference you will have. I probably have more than @LitterBug so I need a VTX with more punch.

What kind of interference? If you don't know what it is, then you are not solving your problem you are just causing more interference on top of the interference already there.
Like colored break up. We have a LOT of trees so that it probably the cause of it.

Power is NOT the end all cure all and often too much power causes more problems than it solves.
Yeah, but when you are flying a 5" for the second or third time, it's nice to know that you aren't going to be short on power. When you get better you can start experimenting on what kind of range you can get.
