FDM Bandito - DTFB Conversion of the Viejo

My good buddy @Zetoyoc keeps taunting me with this small sub 40" flying wing platform, the Viejo. It is a Balsa Kit from somewhere in Europe:

I am not sure I agree with the power plant chosen by the Manuf., but I do agree with the look. It is sharp. and looks like a blast to fly. After the second time taunting me with this... I inquired into the details and realized it was a simple park flyer size (890mm) which is ~35". at 11pm last night, I thought... a piece of Foam Board is 20" wide, 2 armin style wings of those widths swept ~20° will bring me right on the mark. It looked to even have enough sheet leftover for a fuselage, enough to make it a 1 sheet wonder. In about 45 mins I had something to work with and 15 min after I was ready to pull out the iron and glue. But it was later, and school buses run early.
This is what I turned out by the end of the night:

Design Specs:
Wing Span - 36"
Wing Chord - 6"
Wing Shape - Clark-Y (Ironed with 3° Wingtip Washout)
Length - 16"
2- 5g servos (9g will work too)
Motor - 2205 2300kv Brushless
Esc - 20-30Amp ESC
Battery - 2200mAh 3S 35C or better
AUW - 250g ?

I plan to 3d print/use this Spinner

Thanks guys.
I got a moment at lunch.

This wing perfectly illustrated why I love to iron DTFB.

I am on the hunt for a water bottle that yield a great bubble canopy. Or I may DTFB it, or 3D print. Dunno. Any thoughts?

That may be the winner tomorrow.
For all the time spent in front of the project I realized my failing. Not installing the servos prior to closing the wing. (I can't find my extensions.)

With 5g with extensions, or 9g without.
I found a spinner... and I think I will use a B-pack with a 6.5x6.5e prop on a 4S. 1300mAh
I hope I can get this ready for flight by Wednesday.

I have an F-pack ready too. I have to work out internal supports for Either as the standard pod is too Long. Even sideways.

For the bubble canopy you could make a solid former and heat up a sheet of plastic and wrap the formers in plastic or you could 3d print one

Progress this morning. Found emax servos and extensions. :) I then pulled them through the tiny cavity ahead of the spar. There were no pussy cats and rainbows in this process.:cautious:
Also found an F-pack motor setup. This should be assembled tonight.

Working up plans. While Viejo is liked name for the town in CA, it is also "old" and Spanish. With the right power setup, this will hit 100mph.
This makes me think of the phrase "fly it like you stole it" Who does that? bandits that's who.

Now if you loved Johnny Quest as I did... It is tempting to make a logo like the dog bandit from the old cartoon

Instead, I think of a wild west Bandit.
I will rename this the Bandito!

One last parting idea:
Do I make a Disney planes style canopy with the eyes from above?
Or just a normal canopy?

Eyes, definitely with eyes.

I like the dog. But then again, the other one reminds me of "Outlaw Josie Wales" which was one of my favorite Eastwood movies.

I 3d printed a canopy
IMG_20210825_110505197.jpg IMG_20210825_112532404.jpg
After cutting out the wing hole (using the end of the wing. I slid the wing in. I had to add a cutout for the control horn
IMG_20210825_112543026.jpg IMG_20210825_113445371.jpg
I added a spinner. And we the spacer at the back of the power pod.
IMG_20210825_113519374.jpg IMG_20210825_143945284.jpg
So the pod is level. Then I began cutting out, trimming and placing them on the plane.

I just mounted the decal to the top of the craft.
IMG_20210828_004843557.jpg

It looks like I want. I have some detail tape work for the underside and I am currently bleary eyed and tire. Not a time to start that. Purple and white with black decals will be the underside.

Tomorrow a maiden I think. Wish me luck

This one has two of my favorite characteristics of a model. One, it looks cool, and the best part, U got done quick.
