Spitfire76's Build Log of a Stick XL

Here I go again starting yet another project when I have so many incomplete ones in various stages of construction.

I have built the FT Simple Stick and it flies great but wanted something the size of the Hanger 9 Ultra Stick that one of my fellow club members flies. I have a FT 2814 1100 kv motor that I recovered from a FT Scout XL that I crashed on its maiden to use. I had made the Scout's wing removable in order to fit into my car and I am sure that had something to do with its demise. This should not be a problem with a Stick XL as it has a removable wing.

I checked to see if any other community member had attempted this build and this seemed to be the one that had made the most progress.

I decided though that I would try this myself as I have never scaled up a FT plan. I found it easy to increase the size by a percentage but soon realized that the gap for the folds has to remain the thickness of the foam board. I've started with one of the simplest parts - the power pod. Since this uses the A fold the inner line of the fold remains where it is and the outer line is moved to reduce the gap back to the original size. Its the reverse for a B fold.

As @Draftman1 found 139% allows the wing parts to fit on one sheet of foam board although as with the Scout XL the top and bottom halves will have to be on separate sheets.

Also working on a 3d printed firewall, similar to the one @SP0NZ designed for the Scout XL

Prototype Power Pod completed. A 3300mAh battery fits. As with the original FT Stick the ESC (40A) will be mounted under the power pod for cooling.

Before doing too much work on the Fuselage I should look into what landing gear to use. I don't want to use the typical wire gear but rather something like this

I recall one FT plane did have this type of landing gear but forget which one.

Found it! It was the initial version of the FT Legacy.

In scaling up the fuselage I found an error on the Simple Stick plan 1.0 that I have - it should be a "B" fold not and "A" fold.

I downloaded the plan again from the FTCA site and see that it was corrected in version 1.1 of the plans.

In downloading the latest plan it bought to my attention the copyright information at the top of each sheet. I understand the reason for adding this to later plans and fully support it but it made me be wonder if I should be doing this scaled up version or at least seek permission.

It's fine as long as it is for your own use. You can't modify plans for any other purpose.

Anything you do for personal use is perfectly fine. Carry on, brother!

The last sentence does state that modifications can be shared on FT domains but then the Stick plans are only available to FTCA members so its not clear to me how much could be shared.

Maybe I'll check into the Hanger version of the Stick to see if XL plans of that could be shared since the orignals are already avaiable on this forum to download.
