Depends on the power.

But yes you can and often have to off set the motor so it points to the right.
This helps reduce the torque and steers the plane straight.

Variable pitch props from what I understand allow you to set the speed of the motor and the pitch of the props can then be varied to the desired speed.

At least that is how it works on the real planes.

ohhhhhh ok thanks, so you actually offset the motor rather than the propeller baldes. thats crazy stuff. how did you calculate how much to offset it? did you using some formula for torque and weight and distance from CM etc? lol, sounds too complicated for an RC hobbyist :p

No real formula I just winged it.

On my normal planes like the FT Racer I use a popsicle stick. :)

Yeah just off set it and give it a shot.

Depending on the design if you find the plane climbs aggressively when you apply power you can nose down the motor as well.

Photos/videos later but the Spit met its end at FF 2014.

I guess there is a slight down draft off the hills and I found it. POW.

Ouch, that's nasty. Nice build btw, I was watching it at college. You have really become an excellent builder!

Thank you.

Just a lousy pilot this weekend :)

I couldn't land with a nickel but I'll get that under control.

The motor should be ok I'll check it all this week and start building the 50" cub...

Bummer, looks like you were likely too high for a downdraft of that magnitude to come from the hill. I would guess that something on the plane failed you.

Well the wing was grumpy after the trip and so on but I'll chalk it up to pilot error.

At least the parts went to a good use. EPIC use :)

Look what followed me home.

My Dad tip stalled his Spitfire and said he'd rather not experience that again.

So that big hot motor from the 60" has a new home.

I'm going to repair it, remove the landing gear and reenforce the nose section to handle the big 3536.

I got 4 motors which are more powerful than that on my quadcopter..

Andre, like this one.... I have just finished enlarging my plan for a 55" spit, and was pleased to see your finished one... Now, is there a video on building sequence??????????????????????????????
Have a FirePower Sport 46 that I'm planning on using in it.....
Like this one buddy... plane that is..

Oh the stock FT Spit loved that big motor but I couldn't keep my Dad's plane.

Handed it back to him and told him to fly it.

He has ever since.

No build video on my stuff recently I've been to slack and lazy ;)

Here are some of my measurements for the biggie...
Wingspan-56"
Cord- 11.5"
Fuse length-36.25"
Width-3"
Height-4.5"
Stab/elevator- 6.25" X 16.5"
Fin/Rudder-8" X 8.25"
I picked up two sheets of 5mm foamboard, 32" X 40" in order to keep the wing in one pc (each half) and full tips, not clipped as yours is.
I see you doubled the fuse sides with an extra pc of foamboard, is this needed?? I was going to double the sides back to behind the wing.
Is that what you did??
And why the alum plate for motor mount?? I'm going to use 3/16" ply, only... And your power box, I like this, more strength.. Did you use Hard Balsa for this or something else??
Motor?? I have a FirePower Sport 46, 5046-06 that i'm tinkering with for the spitty... 4cell lipo, 2700mAh.. 60amp ESC.... Prop?? Not sure yet, three blade or two, around the 12 to 14 inch.... still debating...
Anyway, this is my start so better get at the cutting of foam...
A.

The wing cord will be troublesome.
You'll have to make the wing with a few pieces of foam.

I cheated on mine ;)

The motor mount/plate thing was so I could uses the shaft of the motor.
Wanted to run that nice spinner.

Wood was 1/2" dowels which I used to make the Tricopter.

Double up where you can.
My first crash it cracked right behind the wood structure where the double wall ended.

And you will want to carry that on beyond the wing section just to keep it all strong.

Cut away and have fun.
I did like the plane but she was beast to transport.

Andre.
