HK Super Mini Quadcopter_ Build Log

I ordered these particular ESCs as they were recommended on the order page. I now notice they are no longer recommended.

The reason that they are no longer recommended, is because they are out of stock.

I remember people complaining that they would add recommended components and then their entire order would be put on backorder. I guess that this is the way that HK fixed it.

Edit: Oops. Looks like you bought the "airplane only" version of the ESC. Those are still in stock.

Yes. It looks like you got the board not properly adjusted but I guess it isn´t the boards fault.

I believe the those ESC´s have a too low update rate so they can not change their orders, which they get from the board, quick enough because they are limited in terms of processing speed.

I agree with Anas .. looks indeed like you need some 12A Turnigy Plush esc's.
Program them well, setup the throttle end points right en it should be solved.
Problem remains that these Plush are BK forever since David showed us how to build your own tri ... ;-)

Hi guys,
I have been following flitetest since its inception but I'm fairly new to this forum. I'm looking for parts to make my first qua and I'd like to ask your opinion on this. I have heard bad things about HK's mini quad frame with motors so I intend to buy them separately. I have budget constraint too so I'm trying to keep my list below $100 including shipping.

Frame:

Motor (1600kv):

ESC (15-18A):

Prop (8x4):

Running 1000mah to 1300mah 2s and using HK Control Board v2.1

This is just my rough selection, your advices are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey Johntra, thanks for the link. I've ordered new ESCs already, but for the record the HK10A ESCs (and interestingly also the Plush 12A ESCs) have the SIL type chip which cannot be flashed with RapidESCs.

@ nguyen, I wouldn't write off the kit just yet. Yes there are some faults with the motors but treated as per the advice in this thread they come up fine. Not great, not perfect, but fine. I do believe if I picked the right ESCs in the first place the quad would be flying now and there are vids on you tube showing them fly. So if the budget is primary I reckon this kit could be the go. When the new ESCs arrive I'll get this flying so you can make your judgment then.

I notice, though, that you are shooting for a slightly larger quad. This means better stability and ease of flying. However I'd go for proven ESCs, for example I have Plush 18A coming for my tricopter project as they are proven in other Tris. Bigger size brings bigger price so you may need to consider that. I have to admit that the goal of this project is to make the cheapest yet half decent quad that I could.

There is an interesting page on the multi wii copter shop. These guys sell frames but they are good enough to post a page of things that they have found that work through trial and error: http://www.multiwiicopter.com/gear-list/ Note the flyfun ESCs are very similar to the equivalent plush escs.

Note also your shopping list will need the Atmega programmer.

@ glydr: thanks for the advice. I have considered the smaller kit like you have but i also want to use the motors for other airplanes i have after im done with this quad. I dont have the technicality and knowledge to fix these motors so I rather buy a better ones now and not worry about it. What do you think?
Regarding ESC, what about the hobbyking Blueseries 12A? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...2A_BlueSeries_Brushless_Speed_Controller.html
I have pretty good experience with this one. For my quad and motor size (prob running 7 to 8in prop on 2s), do you think 12A can handle it?

Also if i intend to just fly out of the box, is Atmega programmer necessary?

@glydr: thanks. I already ordered it. Still waiting for my order to clear. HK is getting weirdly slow nowadays, I rmbed my orders last year only took a day to be shipped, my recent order took at least 3 days now just to clear the payment.

Still waiting for the ESCs ??

Not any more!

Located them in the quad, soldered the power leads together. Now I've 'only' got the motor leads to go. That's 12 individual solder joints.

...

Might take a break!

Come on g... Make copter while the rain falls...

I've been in Sydney today for a family event (that's about 2 1/2 hours drive each way from Canberra) therefore not much chance of soldering. Back now and about to get into it.

I'd take pictures but the photos wouldn't show much, just imagine what I've been doing so far with quality ESCs rather than the HK ones.

By the way, the HK ones have started finding themselves in other projects - they aren't bad when used strictly for fixed wing applications.

Cheers for the kudos fred0000, I'm sure the ESCs will do the trick. I hope to have all up and running by next weekend.
