Tiger 2 build log

Hello,
Last weekend I got from a friend my first Glow plane. Glows are noisy, dirty, expensive to operate, complicated, unreliable and pollutant.... aren't they awesome?!??!

It was a great experience. My hands and legs were shaking....

Well, I have decided to build a glow plane. So here it is. A Tiger 2. It seems to me cool and easy to fly...

This is going to be the build log. Wish me luck.

It's a good plane too. When you get it all built and covered, thin some 30 min epoxy with 90% alcohol till it's paintable and brush the inside of the engine area, fuel tank area and servo bay with it. This will fuelproof the areas, help lock down the covering material and give extra joint firmness to the lite ply and balsa parts. It'll fly with an FP40 (40 LA, bushed 40 of the likes) but whats the fun in that. It flys really well with a well behaved 46 and is quite fun an appropriately sized 4 stroke.

My suggestion is to approach a friend that runs these engines and has one broken in well and buy it from them. You can learn how to break in a new engine later.

My first low-wing trainer (and 2nd RC plane) was a Goldberg Sky Tiger, very much like the Tiger 2. It was a heck of a lot of fun to fly with an OS 46sf motor. What a great plane - large enough to see while it was 3 or so mistakes high, and was a great introduction to the slightly reduced stability that a low-wing plane brings to the table.

I'm getting misty just thinking about it...

Thanks MrClean for your advice! I'll do what you suggest.

I've made some progress with the wings.

First we need to cut the rips:

And glue them together with the spars:
IMG_20151204_170814908.jpg

Then glue the wingtips:
IMG_20151206_241327456.jpg

Now comes the step I have big doubts: Glue the two parts together with epoxy. Is this going to be strong enough???

IMG_20151208_224527019.jpg

The dihedral is 2 degrees, after some maths its 2.5cm on the wingtip

IMG_20151208_212600926.jpg

After this I must cover the wings with 2mm balsa sheets and then glue again the two parts using fiber glass... I hope it doesn't break in the first loop!!!

With shear webbing on the spars, and after adding wing sheeting and fiberglass tape/glue at the center joint, you will have a very, very strong wing.

Yeah, The Goldberg designs are super solid. If you intend on doing more than just basic flying you can always add shear webs to the trailing edge of the main spar. This will make the wings even stronger with minimal weight impact. The glass and epoxy will help keep the root together and make sure the dihedral is set. The majority of the strain is placed on your spars.

Awesome work.

It shouldn't do that....
These trainers are usually designed with new pilots in mind, so I wouldn't worry too much about the wings.

Wow, you barcode all your pieces? You're way ahead of me, bro. No wonder why I can never find anything.

I picked up an unflown T2 with a new Saito 4S for the price of used Saito 4S - Maybe put it on skiis this winter.

Thanks everybody for your words and tips. No, Peter I don't barcode everything. I'm just too lazy to remove the sticks, but I have a spreadsheet to record costs and time wasted...

More progress on wing

Anyway the universe sent me a message. They were selling modeller's electric saws on the local foodstore (WTF!). I HAD to buy it and start with the fuselage.

Tools and cutting the pieces on the plan

Is there anything better to glue pieces using bottles of beer to hold them??

For christmas my wife is going to give me .46 :) yayyy!!! So now I have a deadline, the 6th of january. (yeah in Spain the presents are given the 6th). Everything must be ready to install the engine and proceed with the break in.

First we need to make the wing wheels sockets

IMG_20151220_112308556_HDR.jpg

IMG_20151220_112321686.jpg

Next to finish the fuselage. Let's put the tubes for the piano wire
IMG_20151220_112221917_HDR.jpg

Cut the final pieces
IMG_20151220_112241579_HDR.jpg

Glue them
IMG_20151220_172304882.jpg

Not very happy with the result. Not totally straight, but not a big drama.
IMG_20151220_192033164.jpg

Now install the wheels. It was a big adventure to bend the 4mm piano wire...
IMG-20151222-WA0017.jpg

Make and install the ailerons

After you've flown it for a while, if you notice that it's a bit floaty on landing many folks take a bay off each side of the wing. It's an easy mod. However, it makes a good float plane too so you might want to leave those bays on. You can make two wings.
Build so far looks just like I remember it. You'll enjoy the plane.

In Christmas I've been too busy having fun... so now I have a big delay on this proyect....

Tail:

IMG_20160104_204712505.jpg
IMG_20160105_010604951.jpg

Canopy:

IMG_20160105_010434890.jpg
The canopy is really awful, that black lines really gives it a look of a sarcophagus. It seems that Lenin's or Mao's mummy is going to be inside!! :( I'll try another one....

Now I'm going to see how straight I can glue the tail wings...

Mmmmmmm, balsa.

The tail shouldn't be a huge problem as long as the stabilizer and elevator are both in line with the original centerline of the fuselage. That may mean your vertical stab is installed at an angle compared to how it was built, but it should work ok. Nobody will see it when it's up in the air!

Your build is looking great. How do the wings attach on this model? I have an unknown, neglected ARF that I'm building/redoing that looks very similar to the Tiger2. It looks like mine was supposed to attach with rubber bands, but I plan to modify the wing to bolt on. I think your process will help mine.

Thanks,

Thanks a lot!!!
The wing is screwed with two nylon bolts into a U shaped plywood piece. A stick in the front of the wing fits into the former...

Use two of this nuts. Don't know the name in english, sorry...

It's really strong, but I've been thinking about using rubbers too. I love them. They protect the plane in case of crashing.

Thank you for the additional pictures. I was planning on doing something very similar, but need to figure out a way to install a dowel into the pre built wing halves. Can't wait to see your covering.

Gonna have to build me one when I get the shop back up. Yours is looking good. I took over the build of one that the guy didn't read instructions to well. The landing gear wont' going to work to well on the top of the wing.
